Minimizing Chemical Consumption

If you don’t currently purchase organic food, consider swapping out a few of your favorite produce selections for organic. This will limit consumed pesticides and herbicides, which have been linked to cause certain birth defects, obesity, diabetes, ADHD and various forms of cancer.

Also consider organic/grass-fed meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products, as well.

I understand that buying organic can get costly. Good news is, some foods are less likely to contain pesticides than others. Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen list every year. Follow it to know which vegetables and fruits would be best consumed organically, and which are okay conventionally grown.

Here's a list of fruits and vegetables to consider purchasing organically:

  • Strawberries
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Nectarines
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Hot peppers

Okay to buy conventionally grown:

  • Avocados
  • Sweet corn
  • Pineapple
  • Onions
  • Papaya
  • Sweet peas (frozen)
  • Eggplant
  • Asparagus
  • Cauliflower
  • Cantaloupe
  • Broccoli
  • Mushrooms
  • Cabbage
  • Honeydew
  • Kiwi
